For the Sixth Sunday of Easter…
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give it to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.
John 14:27
We rest in the presence of Jesus when we pray. Jesus does not count the minutes, doling out more or less peace accordingly. Look at the birds and flowers, he reminded us, who have no worries about how they will be fed, clothed or survive tomorrow. The world can only give us temporary peace, mere distractions from pain or perhaps fleeting happiness, which offers false hope at best. Our prayers are cherished by Jesus who promised to give us a lasting peace because he desires to be with us. A quick prayer as we rush through the day or a longer meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary both bring peace and hope to a troubled heart. Enough peace, in fact, that we can share it with others.
Dear Jesus, my deepest desire rests in the selfless love you have given to the world.
