A Prosperity of the Soul

For the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time…

The father of orphans and the defender of widows

is God in his holy dwelling.

Psalm 68:6

There are late-night televangelists who preach a “gospel of prosperity.” They promise (especially if you send a donation) that if your faith in God is strong enough, you will be blessed in ways that will make you successful and powerful. While I have no doubt that God can work through us in any way he chooses, I don’t believe that the “power of my faith” affects my wealth and social standing.

What God can and does give us is an inner peace based on what we really need. Our strength in life comes not from telling God to give us what we think we need, but rather from depending on God to give us our daily bread. My life is good. I think I have all that I need and then some. But I glory in the fact that my God is also the God of orphans, widows and the poor—those who might have less but who receive the same measure of inner peace and strength that only God can deliver.

God, be the provider of prosperity for my soul.
