A Father We Can Trust

Peter [said] to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 2:38-39

The Baptisms of my children are memories I cherish. I can’t remember each detail of every one, but there are moments in each celebration that stand out: standing before the assembly at a Sunday Mass, catching the reflection of stained glass in the baptismal waters, the homily comparing my child to an orc (it made sense in context!).

I’ve tried to be a good father to my children, even as I am acutely aware of my weaknesses and failures. But God is a true and perfect Father. He calls all of us to become his adopted sons and daughters through Baptism. He promises to remain near to us so long as we cling to him as a child clings to a parent.

Because he is a perfect Father, we know that we can trust God’s promises. We plant our hope in him, and he will never fail us.

Heavenly Father, I believe in the promises you made when I was baptized. Help me to live so as to never stray and to hope so as to never fall into despair.
