A Place for All In the Harvest

Focus on Prayer

The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Luke 10:2

An elderly gentleman’s eyes sparkled as he told me about his forty-year service as a eucharistic minister. In the midst of his married life, he had found time to carry the Eucharist to the sick. Recently a young man told me of his plans to give two years of his life to work with the poor. These men have something in common: both are laborers for the Lord’s harvest.

When I was young, many thought that the term “laborers for the harvest” applied mostly to priests and religious. But in various ways, we are all laborers for the Lord’s harvest if we try to spread the Kingdom of God. Even when we become old and ill we remain laborers through our prayers. Prayer is a powerful way to spread the Kingdom of God. And in our prayers, we can ask the Lord to send lay people, priests and religious to reap the harvest as God wills.

Lord, receive my prayers for all who work to spread your kingdom. Thank you for including me among those who labor for your harvest.
