After the Call

For the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time…

Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.

Matthew 10:8

After the call of the Twelve by Jesus, he instructed them to go out and preach and heal and bring the Good News to others. And he concluded his notes to them with this reminder: “Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

Make a list of what your faith has brought to you, what it has given to you. I’m thinking of a pretty long list that started with my Baptism. Our society has a well-worn cliché, and even a song, that Sinatra sings, “The best things in life are free.” I have to agree… but I also know there is much more to life than just our appreciation of the good, the true, and the beautiful. We are called to share those amazing intangibles. We are called to share Christ, to become his disciples and bear witness to all he has given us, by our words and by our deeds—with a living faith.

Lord, Jesus, make me your instrument. Let me sow your love. Let give without cost.
