An Acceptable Time

By Terence Hegarty

As much as we may not like to admit it, there are teachings of the faith with which we have difficulty. Surely, there are some precepts of the Church that seem very difficult to understand. Or, maybe we do no understand but have a hard time accepting those teachings. That’s where faith comes in. And that’s where the great season of Lent comes in. Later this month, we will be called to examine our faith more closely. Yet, even with a strong faith life, we can find ourselves falling into sin. Thank God for Ash Wednesday!

It’s not every day that any one of us would walk down the street and broadcast that we are a sinner. But, to kick off this penitential season, we are willing to go to school, to work, or to the grocery store with ashes on our forehead for all to see. We turn to God in humility, admitting that we don’t know everything, admitting that we have failed, but that we are also striving to practice the faith well. During this acceptable time, may we, through God’s grace, have the courage to turn from our sinful ways, knowing that eternal life with Jesus awaits us when we do so faithfully.

If you wish, sit quietly and reflect on the following questions:

  • Do I understand and/or believe that Lent is a grace-filled season?
  • How can I best prepare myself to celebrate the Resurrection with joy?
