Author Interview: 20 Questions With Sarah Hart

About You:

Living Faith: Describe your vocation in life.
Sarah Hart: To love, and to love, and to love!

LF: Give a brief bio.
SH: I’ve been a singer, songwriter, music producer, retreat author and keynote speaker for over 25 years. She has performed for countless conventions and events, and for Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Square.

As a Grammy-nominated and Mark Award winning songwriter, my songs have been recorded by numerous recording artists and have appeared in TV, film and commercials. My work as a score composer for children’s animations earned her an ALA Odyssey award, and my songwriting is visible in hymnals across the globe.

LF: Do you reach out to readers online via a website or social media?
SH: I can be reached on FacebookInstagram, YouTube and my personal site, SarahHart.com.

LF: Share a little about your ministry or daily work. (A day in the life looks like…?)
SH: Writing music, traveling and singing at churches, recording music, writing for special projects and hanging with my husband and family.

LF: How long have you been writing or when did you start?
SH: I’ve been writing music since I was 12 and writing poetry for as long as I can remember.

LFWhat is the most difficult part of your writing process?
SH: Finding enough time to write and be in a creative space with all of my commitments.

LF: How many books have you written, and which is your favorite? If you haven’t written a book, name a favorite that you’ve enjoyed.
SH: I’ve only written one small book, a devotional. But I have written about 3,000 songs and have 14 full-length recordings under my belt.

LFWhere do you live today, and is that different from where you grew up?
SH: I live in Nashville, TN. It is very different! I grew up in a small blue-collar community in Ohio. Nashville is quite big by comparison.

LFThree words your best friend would use to describe you.
SH: Creative, compassionate, sincere (that’s from my husband 😊)

LF: One additional thing you would want a Living Faith reader to know about you that we haven’t covered above. (A hobby, something silly or fun, an accomplishment, or an interesting fact?)
SH: I am a master whistler!

About Faith:

LF: When did you first know that God loved you?
SH: This is an impossible question…from the very first, I guess. I have always felt that love.

LF: Describe a prayer practice that is meaningful to you.
SH: Praying in the car while driving! My mind just takes over and there is so much that my subconscious brings forth.

LF: What’s something you’ve learned from the Bible or from the Mass or the Sacraments that has always stayed with you?
SH: What has stayed with me most about Jesus is his beautiful rebellious nature. He did not abide the foolishness of the teachers and scholars of the day but lived in the complete Love of the Father, first and foremost. I remember as a teenager in religion class becoming very enamored with this person who was trying to lead hearts to a new way of worship, a new path of love, that had nothing to do with rules and regulations.

LFWhat excites you about being a Catholic?
SH: The people of the Catholic church, the body of Christ. I travel extensively in Catholic churches all over the world and am so buoyed by the good work I see the laity undertaking. It is surely so beautiful to God.

About the Bible:

LFWhat’s your favorite Bible story, psalm, proverb or parable and why?
SH: I absolutely love the story of Esther. Her courage in the face of such adversity and societal pressure is staggering, her bravery to speak in a time when women were possessions rather than people. A woman of great intelligence, strength and complete trust in the Lord.

LFDo you have a favorite Gospel? If so, which one? Elaborate if you wish.
SH: This is like asking “who is your favorite child?”—impossible!

LFIf you could spend a day with a person mentioned in the Bible (besides Jesus), whom would you choose?
SH: Mary Magdalene, without question.

About Living Faith:

LF: How long have you been writing for Living Faith?
SH: Only about a year and a half.

LF: Do you ever get to meet your Living Faith readers? What do you talk about?
SH: Not yet!

LF: What is one thing you love about Living Faith?
SH: Being part of such a beautiful offering! This resource is so lovely, and I am grateful to be a part of it.
