Our Daily Bread
As I have done for you, you should also do. John 13:15
One of the endearing qualities of Jesus’ personality is his compassion. We see this quality displayed throughout his life as the gift of his servant leadership unfolds. We see it at the Last Supper as he rises from the table after the meal, ties a towel around his waist and begins washing the feet of his disciples. In doing this, he offers us a way of being in communion with one another that is just as significant as sharing a meal together. This special way includes breaking the bread of our lives through compassionate listening and healing presence.
Jesus hands us the towel and says, “As I have done for you, you should also do.” On this Holy Thursday, as we lovingly finger the towel, we contemplate the many ways we are called to be Eucharist. In addition to the altar where we meet each Sunday, we gather in the marketplace of life. We are fed by listening to each other’s stories and being sensitive to the many needs that are visible all around us. There are many ways of being Eucharist. Take the towel. Go into the world with the ointment of your life.
