The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
By the word of the LORD the heavens were made;
by the breath of his mouth all their host.
Psalm 33:6
Often our manner of breathing reveals something about our emotional state. When we’re anxious or terrified, we may feel as if we’re holding our breath or that our breathing is shallow and rapid. When we’re feeling heavily burdened, our breath may be let out in one long, continuous sigh. When we’re in a state of contentment, our breath may be described as even and peaceful.
The psalmist reveals what happens when God “breathes,” a breath so centered, vibrant and generative that it creates new life and new possibility everywhere. It’s an invitation for each of us to reflect on the blessings that should follow in the wake of every breath we take.
Loving God, may my breathing in and breathing out create a mind-fulness of your presence in my life and in the lives of all I meet today.
