Charlotte was Both, By Amy Welborn

Welcome to an occasional series focusing on the blogs and writing works of our Living Faith writers…

As a reader, a writer and an editor, I have long been blessed by Amy Welborn’s prolific prose and perspectives on life and faith. While she writes in many places and platforms online (including a newish Substack blog), and of course here on the pages of Living Faith, and more than 30 books for adults, teens, and children… I’ve chosen to highlight her ever-present blog of many years, Charlotte was Both. (An explainer of this quirky title may be familiar to fans of Charlotte’s Web at the bottom of this page.)

Amy’s own description of the blog…

It is what it is

Seeker Friendly.

What I most often read are Amy’s timely posts around different moments or feasts within liturgical year. Such as this one recently about Easter Monday. Or the culture-watching, or more to the point, Catholic-culture watching, such as this post, diving into the seeming “bump” in Catholic converts heading to the Church this Easter.   Here’s a snip from that post that challenges us to be that community that accompanies those searching for Christ, where they know it or not:

We live in a world that’s increasingly dehumanized and inhumane. In which real life experience is replaced by screens and – this is very important – in which it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine the truth and authenticity of anything, whether it be institutional claims, news reports or created content.

Where can you go to find that still-living thirst for the Real, for Love, for Truth?

Maybe, an institution that you know, even if only by rumor, is about love and community. That’s been around for two thousand years. That has a solid presence, there in your neighborhood, your town, in every city you speed through, going from here to there to nowhere.

An Anxious Generation is seeking peace. A peace that the world, they already know, even in their youth, hasn’t – and perhaps cannot – give.

Amen. But I digress.

Finally, I’ve enjoyed “touring” places that Amy has had occasion to travel, such as this post about Pistoia, 30 minutes from Florenceor, say, Pittsburgh.

(You may recall Amy’s posts in this space about her spur-of-the-moment jaunt to St. Peter’s Square to await the puffs of white smoke that announced the election of Pope Leo. After that adventure, she was my pick for this Living Faith Kids project.)

I hope you enjoy exploring Charlotte Was Both
