…a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and glory for your people Israel.
Luke 2:32
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord has always held a special place in my heart. The feast day commemorates the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. I first encountered this feast of light and hope and its beauty during my college seminary days. Each year, we processed to the chapel in candlelight, singing the simple yet profound refrain: “Christ is the light of all the nations. And the glory of his people, Israel.”
Though I did not go on to become a priest, the grace of this feast has remained close to me. When my children were little, I wanted to pass along the joy of this feast to them. So, on each February 2nd, we would gather, light candles, and process around the house singing the same verse that had stirred my heart as a young man. Together, we proclaimed Christ as the Light of the World.
The Feast of the Presentation reminds us that Jesus, brought to the Temple, is the fulfillment of the promise of light for the world. It calls us to carry that same light into the darkness of our world. For me, this feast is a reminder of God’s enduring presence and a tradition of faith I cherish deeply.
