For the devotion on 8/14, Patrick reflects on how marriage embodies love and directs us to love not just our spouses but everyone:
…when Jesus is put on the spot by the Pharisees regarding divorce, he turns to the Book of Genesis where God’s original vision was for a husband and wife to become one in love, faithful to each other all the days of their lives. It is a wonderful vision for married life, yet we all know situations where that it is not always the case. Jesus has a desire for all our lives, whether we are married or single; it is that we would love one another as he loves us. We don’t always live out of that vision, but it is worth striving towards. If we open ourselves to the help of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of the Lord,’ which is love, we will manage to give expression to this vision, at least from time to time. Known as the Golden Rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
