Greet the Giver With Joyful Song

Sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds. Psalm 98:1

We recall the Lord’s wondrous deeds on behalf of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist. As we ponder the marvelous graces given to these two mothers, one young and one old, we can be moved to contemplate what represents the new and miraculous in our own lives.

It could be a child or grandchild, a niece or nephew. Perhaps our “new life” is the channeling of our creative energies in a different or unexpected direction. Then again, we may be experiencing a new twist to an existing reality, like changes moving us from one stage of life to another or a relationship that is taking on an added dimension.

At times, the entire world may seem filled with new discoveries, pioneer efforts, breakthrough events. New places and people, new sounds and sights, new ideas and achievements: these are the wondrous advents that surround us daily. Our response to the Lord’s great deeds is a willingness to accept what is offered, greeting the Giver with a song of joy.

O God, source of all that is new and good, to you I sing my gratitude.
