Hear His Voice

…seek what is above… Colossians 3:1

The things of this earth are not bad. On the contrary, this world was created by God, so they are fundamentally good. However, when used incorrectly, they can become an obstacle to our life in God. The Scripture today speaks loudly to us about seeking God first. How can we know when we have become slaves of earthly things? When these worldly goods become our primary focus or when we become excessively desirous and covet these things, that is when we have become ensnared by them. Sadly, this can happen easily in our consumer-driven society. The psalm response offers an antidote to this common modern malady. We ought to “hear his voice.” We are especially able to hear God’s voice in prayer, in the liturgy, and in the silence of our hearts. Today, let us spend a few moments in silence, listening with our hearts to hear our God who dwells within.
