Holding on to Our Amazement

All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Luke 2:18-19

Amazement comes and goes, doesn’t it? We all experience it from time to time, but it usually fades into the background as the press of everyday life demands our attention.

Can you think of the last time you were amazed? If so, you are a little like Mary, keeping things in your heart. It might take a little effort, but it can be done. But be warned: Cynicism will drive it away. So will pervasive doubts about the possibility of being sure of anything at all. And then there’s the fear of being disappointed to contend with.

Shepherds have told us of angels and their messages, of good news for all people, of the arrival of a Messiah and Lord. It’s not that hard to be amazed by such tales, but it will take some effort to keep these things in our hearts for another year. Let us hold the example of Mary in our hearts, too, and ask her help to keep our amazement alive.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
