I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35
Hunger and thirst. Bread and water. It’s so physical. I hunger for God like I hunger for food, like I need it to live. And I do, in the sense Jesus so often uses: not to live a life that is empty, disconnected from God, sleep-walking in the dark.
And I thirst for a connection to the divine, for a near-physical sense of the truth in which I live and move and have my being. There are few things more glorious than a drink of cool, clear water on parched lips. It restores life to your body, which needs more water every day to survive. So it is with the water of life. We are baptized with water, and every day we can quench our spiritual thirst if we choose to do so. Lord, whenever I hunger for God or thirst for connection to you, let me remember that all I need to do is come to you.
