For the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time…
… there was a tiny whispering sound.
When he heard this,
Elijah hid his face in his cloak
and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
1 Kings 19:12-13
Elijah had walked 40 days and nights to reach God’s mountain, Horeb. He sought shelter in that cave after experiencing terrible turmoil—prophets being put to death by the sword—he barely escaped with his life!
The Lord was passing by, and Elijah was waiting for him. There was violent wind, an earthquake and fire. But Elijah, the great prophet of old, had a heart attentive and attuned to God. Even with all he had been through, and despite all the fantastic tumult around him, he listened for the still small voice.
We may be reeling from the troubles and tribulations we face. Don’t let them distract us from making time to seek God. Let us approach that holy place where we can hear God in prayer. Amidst the chaos may we keep listening for God, no matter what comes.
