“Listen to Him”

Second Sunday of Lent
February 25, 2024

Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;
from the cloud came a voice,
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
   Mark 9:7

Part of the richness and beauty of Lent is the retelling of the stories of our salvation. Examine the Sunday Gospel this weekend from Mark 9: The mountaintop scene is the fantastic Transfiguration of Jesus. We see God is ultimately revealed in the Person of Jesus. He is seen gloriously transfigured and in conversation with Moses and Elijah—important figures from salvation history, who listened to God when he spoke, and obeyed him. (Well, mostly, they did.) Peter, James, and John witness this with their own eyes and ears. (Mark’s retelling of the event was likely told to him by Peter, whose preaching Mark later wrote down.)

Jesus is the fulfillment of all God has revealed and promised in the Law and the Prophets, as evidenced by his company with Moses and Elijah.

God the Father’s voice instructs the disciples—and us—to “listen to him.” May we, too, be attentive to Jesus’ words and actions.

Lord Jesus, help me to listen and obey what you are inviting me to do.
