For the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever.
John 6:51
I like to bake bread. I’m not great at it, and my results are inconsistent, but I do enjoy it and find the process really interesting. Over the last couple of years, I’ve discovered various no-knead methods of yeast bread baking, and while I’ve never been intimidated by traditional methods, I will admit this has changed my life.
I toss the ingredients together in a container, they do their thing overnight, and the next day I can surprise my son when he comes home from school with freshly baked bread. To nourish someone I Iove is a satisfying, joyous thing and even more so when it is a surprise.
And I will consider this the next time I sit at Mass, surrounded by that larger earthly and heavenly family. What delight he takes in feeding us. To be nourished for now, for eternity, by the Living Bread? What a lovely—even surprising—moment of joy.
Loving Jesus, Living Bread of Life, sustain me.
