Our Humble, Loving King

For the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe…

My kingdom does not belong to this world.
John 18:36

It is natural to want to be esteemed by others. It is good to want to be a great parent, a great teacher, or worker or whatever our state in life. It is a source of pride when we are named “Employee of the Month” and we see our photo on the wall. To work hard and to be recognized for it is good.

But today we are asked to raise our minds higher. Everything in this world is passing away. What is of ultimate concern and everlasting is the Kingdom of God. To be “great” in that kingdom is to follow in the footsteps of the one who is truly great. Jesus’ greatness was revealed in his humble, self-sacrificing love. On the cross, Jesus shows us his greatness.

Today are you being called to the greatness of a self-sacrificing love?

How will you be “great” today?
