Preaching the Kingdom

The First Sunday of Lent
February 18, 2024

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert,
and he remained in the desert for forty days,
tempted by Satan.
He was among wild beasts,
and the angels ministered to him.

After John had been arrested,
Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:
“This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Mark 1:12-15

Since the start of Ordinary Time in January, we’ve been immersed in Mark, chapter one. And this Sunday we get a reprise of the Gospel we’ve heard weeks back. This time, it gives us more of the back story, the context for the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.

Immediately after his Baptism, the Spirit drives Jesus into the desert. There he receives his final preparation for his public ministry. It is not easy. This testing period lasts forty days. Satan himself tempts him. But, also, angels minister to him.

Jesus emerges from the desert to the news of the arrest of the forerunner, John the Baptist. There is no turning back for Jesus. The Baptist’s work is done.

Jesus immediately begins to preach the Kingdom.

Lord, now it is Lent. You invite us to repent and believe. Help us to see our sin, turn from it, and embrace a closer walk with you, sharing the gospel with others.
