For the Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time…
Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? Ezekiel 18:25
The prophet Ezekiel in this chapter is teaching the Jews that the sins of one generation do not fall on the next. A son is not guilty of his father’s crimes, nor is a father guilty of his son’s crimes. This was not necessarily a given in ancient cultures, nor is it necessarily a given in our own.
In today’s reading, the prophet emphasizes that even when we sin, we can still repent and reform. He also warns that it is also possible to turn from doing justice to doing evil.
All of us are capable of repentance. All of us can renounce evil and turn toward the good. Likewise, even those of us who live good lives can give in to injustice.
God’s mercy is always available to us, but ultimately, we must take personal responsibility for our actions, and we must remain vigilant that we not succumb to evil desires and turn away from God.
Father, give me the grace to always remain true to you.
