Renewal Notice

The LORD’s acts of mercy are not exhausted,
his compassion is not spent;
They are renewed each morning—
great is your faithfulness!
The LORD is my portion, I tell myself,
therefore I will hope in him.

Lamentations 3:22-24

Even in retirement, when I don’t have a place where I need to be or a bus schedule I need to follow, I’ve become an early riser. I’m often at my desk downstairs in my home office by 6 am, to sort through overnight emails, scan the headlines and plot my day. After I’ve made my coffee, the first thing I do is walk to the window and crack open the blinds. I take a look down our block.

And there it is, to the east. A burst of orange and blue. Another Florida sunrise.

It never fails to give me a sense of purpose and hope. This is God sending me his daily renewal notice.

“You have another shot,” he says. “Take a moment. Look at what I have made for you. No matter what you think about yesterday, try this. You can begin again. Really. Do it. I believe in you. Let’s do this together.”

Anything seems possible because God has made it so. What will I do with that?

Generous God, thank you for the gift of morning, the promise of another day, the hope of a new beginning.
