Silence

The LORD is good to those who trust in him,
To the one that seeks him;
It is good to hope in silence
For the LORD’s deliverance.

Lamentations 3:25-26

What does it mean to “hope in silence”? It’s not about suffering alone or keeping things in secret. In fact, it’s not about me at all. Except for making the choice to be silent! By quieting my surroundings and my insides, I am actively seeking him. God is the source of the Hope, the giver of Hope. God is Hope itself. But I won’t recognize, or receive Hope, if I don’t make time to be with God in silence.

St. Faustina Kowalska describes it like this…

“In order to hear the voice of God, one has to have silence in one’s soul and to keep silence; not a gloomy silence, but an interior silence; that is to say, recollection in God.”

People who are fond of each other naturally spend time together. So, imagine if you and your spouse, or your best friend, never took time to be alone together. Imagine never sharing the significant things in your heart with another. Eventually, that relationship would inevitably die. Instead, trust the silence. Choose God! Trust in him.

My Lord, you are my only hope.
