For the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time…
The LORD God then asked the woman: What is this you have done?
The woman answered, “The snake tricked me, so I ate it.”
Then the LORD God said to the snake:
Because you have done this, cursed are you among all the animals…
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
They will strike at your head,
while you strike at their heel.
Genesis 3:13-15
The story of salvation history begins it narrative in Genesis. Adam and Eve rebelled against God when they ate the forbidden fruit, triggering the Original Sin. And while punishment came upon them and their progeny, God’s providential love planned a way to save them, and us.
In Genesis 3:15, God foretells the defeat of Satan (the snake) by a mortal blow through the offspring of the woman. Christians have long named this verse the Protoevangelium, or “First Gospel.” Jesus, the Son of the Living God, would come through Mary. Salvation would come through Jesus’ painful death on the Cross and subsequent Resurrection—conquering sin and death.
Only our powerful God can bring good out of evil. What hope we can have in Christ!
Lord Jesus, let me never forget how the Gospel first came into my life. Help me to overcome the sins in my life, through your grace and mercy. Help me never to flirt with evil, but to carry my cross daily and follow you.
