Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves.
Matthew 11:29
For new parents—as well as grandparents, relations and friends—there’s hardly a more thrilling moment than hearing that first heartbeat. When that wooshing sound of life blood surging through a tiny body, pumped by a tiny heart, resounds in the room, we all breathe easier, we look at each other in wonder, and we might even laugh in delight. It’s the place of life and love—the heart. What a life that will grow, nourished by that beating heart, powered by it, sustained by it.
Today we celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus, our Lord and brother. I reflect on his heart, beating not only with human life, but God’s very life and love, and yes, I breathe easier and I might even laugh in delight and joy.
Jesus, bring me closer to your loving heart.
