For the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time…
Heaven and earth will pass away,
but my words will not pass away.
Mark 13:31
Where I live in New England, Daylight Savings Time ended last weekend, so it is getting much darker earlier and earlier. We will seek and long for the Light more earnestly as the days get shorter and darker, well before the workday ends for most of us.
For many and for the Church, November’s prolonged darkness is also a time to recall our fragile mortality—and to pray for the souls of the faithful departed—and to trust that all of time, and our every breath, is in the mighty hands of God. In Christ Jesus, we are invited to view our lives with an eternal perspective.
Eucharistic Prayer II prays for those who have died in God’s mercy, beseeching, “…welcome them into the light of your face.” That’s the Light I want to chase.
Let us spend these shorter days in the true light that is God’s Word. May it help us move from autumn to winter, blessed to know that each passing season and year brings us closer to knowing, loving and serving God better… until the day we meet God face to face.
Lord Jesus, help me embrace the unchanging Word of God, and may it move me closer to your Light and Love.
