The Writing in the Dirt

Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.

John 8:6

The burning question is: “What did Jesus write?” The short answer: “We don’t know.” But biblical scholars have a few theories. Notice Jesus stoops down twice to write in the dirt. Some say the first time he was merely doodling. This irritated the accusers, so they kept pestering him for an answer. That’s when Jesus stands up and says, “Let the one among you who is without sin throw a stone at her.” Then he stoops and writes again. Some suggest this time he writes a biblical reference—perhaps Jeremiah 17:13? The accusers would have recognized it. In essence it says: those who turn from the Lord will have their names written in the earth, “for they have forsaken the fountain of living water.” Was Jesus writing their names in the earth? We don’t know. But whatever he wrote, it drove the accusers away, one by one.

Jesus, I believe I am a beloved child of God, but I am a sinner too.
