Traveling Light

Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet… Mark 6:11

Not everyone will say “yes” to your good idea. Not everyone will accept your invitation or agree with your deeply held convictions. It’s almost a relief to read these words of Jesus as he sends out the Twelve. Who among us has a 100% favorable response from others? We certainly try, but here on earth, our human encounters are complicated. We rarely love perfectly. In today’s busy and often narcissistic world, people may not want to spend time with you, listen to your story or receive your gifts graciously. This ill reception hurts. But Jesus says to dust off the residue of your disappointment and journey on, keeping an open heart. Offer love and compassion, do good works, spread the gospel with your life, but do not cling to “success,” approval or results. Travel light in your expectations; let humility be your walking stick and leave outcomes to God.
