Into your hands I commend my spirit. Psalm 31:6
These powerful words of the psalmist, made all the more sacred when Jesus uttered them on the cross, offer us profound freedom from the worries and cares that can overwhelm us. Of course, we have obligations and responsibilities that cannot be skirted merely by mouthing pious words, but having engaged our struggles and paid some price, we have to let go.
In the end, we give back to God all the work, sacrifice, joy and sorrow. At the end of the day, we do not belong to ourselves any more than we did at the beginning. These few words make a wonderful prayer at bedtime, or in the middle of the night if the cares of the day surface to tug at our hearts once again.
In the hands of God, our spirits find refreshment and renewal for what lies ahead. God knows best what we need and how best to ready us for what is coming. Though it takes some faith to pray these words from the heart, it is much harder to avoid them by putting all the burden on ourselves.
Lord Jesus, help me to pray these words in faith, trusting all things to your care.
